ESO Hires Research Scientist Remle Crowe for Research and Quality Improvement

Addition of industry data expert, epidemiologist to drive research and quality efforts across EMS

January 7, 2019 – AUSTIN, TexasESO, the leading data and software company serving emergency medical services (EMS), hospitals and fire departments, today announced the hiring of Remle Crowe, Ph.D. as Research Scientist and Quality Improvement Manager.

“Remle is a great addition to our team as we continue to focus on leveraging the power of data to improve health and safety in our communities,” said Dr. Brent Myers, Chief Medical Officer for ESO. “She will play a significant role as we build out our research practice to provide qualified, actionable insights to the industry around emerging topics, such as ketamine use, opioids and overdose practices, as well as traumatic pain management.”

Dr. Crowe brings nearly a decade of EMS experience as an EMT, EMT instructor and researcher. Most recently, she was a research fellow at the National Registry of EMTs, where she performed investigations related to the health and safety of the EMS workforce while pursuing her Ph.D. in Public Health from The Ohio State University. One of her primary research areas of interest has been occupational burnout among EMS providers. Her study, “Work-related burnout is associated with higher odds of turnover intention, sickness absence, and injury in EMS,” was awarded ‘Best Research’ at the 2018 International Scientific EMS Symposium held at EMS World Expo.

Dr. Crowe also helped adapt and test the psychometric properties of a tool used to measure eleven domains of safety culture specifically for EMS, based on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s Surveys on Patient Safety Culture. Additionally, Dr. Crowe has a strong background in process improvement, receiving Six Sigma training as a powertrain quality engineer at Ford Motor Company and serving as faculty for the National Association of EMS Physicians’ Quality and Safety Course. She also served as a volunteer EMT and EMT instructor for the Mexican Red Cross in Mexico City.

“This is a fantastic time to harness the power of data and research for EMS,” said Dr. Crowe. “The datasets we can now access, combined with advanced analytical techniques will undoubtedly contribute to not only better patient outcomes, but also improved provider safety. ESO is truly leading the charge, advancing our profession and putting communities first, by making high-quality data and analytics accessible like never before.”

Dr. Crowe will focus on delivering methodologically-sound research from ESO data and other sources, as well as assessing and creating operational processes for potential performance improvement that will prepare the company for ongoing growth and expansion.
