Shaping COVID-19 Response with EMS Data

How the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Leveraged EMS Data for Improved COVID-19 Response

As COVID-19 cases gained traction across the United States, agencies began planning their response. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) was able to leverage data from their existing data system for syndromic surveillance, but with limitations on formatting. As a state with a population of more than six million residents and 335 transporting EMS agencies, access to clear cut data in real time was paramount.

After partnering with ESO, the IDHS leveraged EMS insights to create more robust and faster reporting, which helped them understand and better respond to their COVID-19 cases. As Dr. Michael Kauffman, the State EMS Director for Indiana, notes, “Having the ability to view real-time reports, coupled with the ease of report generation and output, made ESO the ’solution’ to syndromic surveillance and reporting.”
