The Threat That Burns On

Carcinogenic Exposure and The Importance of Decontamination Procedures for Firefighters

Recent studies, including this one conducted by the ESO research team in late 2023, have illuminated significant gaps in firefighter decontamination practices, raising concerns about increased cancer exposure risks and fire decontamination practices in our public safety community. For instance, despite widespread on-scene decontamination efforts, only 4% of firefighters fully adhere to all established best practices. It’s imperative we equip ourselves with the knowledge and tools necessary to address these challenges head on.

The Threat That Burns On

Overcome the threat that burns on

Firefighters are at an increased risk for cancer than the general population, but there are ways you can help to keep your team safe. The report, The Threat That Burns On: Carcinogenic Exposure and The Importance of Decontamination Procedures for Firefighters, explores the best practices and strategies for mitigating carcinogen exposure. Read it to better understand the risks of your own department, assess your current practices, implement effective solutions, and better support the overall wellness of your team.

So, what steps can you take to keep your team safe?

  • Explore the latest research findings uncovering the potential health hazards posed by fireground contaminants exposure.
  • Learn and follow the recommended best practices for decontamination.
  • Understand and identify the common gaps found in decontamination protocols.
  • Apply what you’ve learned and consistently document all decontamination steps.
