Emergency personnel exemplify adaptability, resilience, and a relentless drive to improve patient care and community safety. At ESO, we believe the next leap forward in supporting the emergency community isn’t about only adopting new technology. Rather, it’s about shaping technology to better serve those who serve others.

The promise of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation is everywhere. We’ve explored, listened to, and watched AI evolve. We wondered, could it deliver real results in our high-stakes industry? Our bar was high: AI must support the expertise, intuition, and professionalism of EMS, fire, and hospital teams.

Today, ESO’s AI promise and approach are rooted in four pillars: human empowerment, responsible and transparent AI, innovation with purpose, and enabling change with confidence.

Pillar 1: Human empowerment.

AI supports people so humans can focus on the work that matters.

Our AI strategy starts with a non-negotiable truth: human judgment is irreplaceable. Our goal is to build tools that lighten the load, reduce friction, and recommend data-backed decisions – while professionals remain fully in control. Which is why, at ESO:

  • AI reduces administrative burden without compromising clinical integrity.
  • Empathy, emotional intelligence, and tough decisions stay in human hands.
  • Every AI tool is optional and respects your organization’s autonomy.

Pillar 2: Responsible and transparent AI.

If it’s not explainable, it’s not acceptable.

We don’t do black-box outputs or opaque data use. Trust is everything in public safety and healthcare. Every AI action should be reviewable, editable, and auditable, so:

  • Models are vetted for bias, compliance, and reliability.
  • Safeguards exist to limit the risk of hallucinations (through proprietary prompting and engineering in structure data sources).
  • Customers own their data, securely.

Pillar 3: Innovate with purpose.

We use AI to solve real problems.

We co-develop AI with the people who’ll actually use it – the EMS providers, fire chiefs, clinicians, and hospital leaders. We launch only when the outcome justifies the tech, and then we evolve based on real-world feedback, so our AI tools always ensure:

  • Targeted automation that reduces redundancy.
  • User satisfaction and documentation speed continues to measurably improve.
  • Compliance standards will never be sacrificed.

Pillar 4: Enable change with confidence.

We help organizations adapt, adopt, and thrive with AI.

In high-stakes environments, AI isn’t plug-and-play. Adoption takes more than code – it takes trust, training, and change management. We support every step of that journey through:

  • Familiar, intuitive designs that reduce learning curves.
  • Built-in user controls and manual overrides that provide peace of mind.
  • Real-time, in-context education that supports learning by doing.

We’re pleased to say that our patience and diligence to never compromise with technology is now a reality. This isn’t about shiny tech. This is about fewer clicks, faster answers, and smarter workflows.

From philosophy to practice: ESO Auto-Generated Narratives.

One way we bring AI to life is through Auto-Generated Narratives, built in the ESO Electronic Health Record (EHR). Auto-Generated Narrative drafts patient narratives using the data already entered – saving time, improving consistency, and reducing burnout. Auto-Generated Narrative reflects our AI philosophy and beliefs in multiple ways:

  • Professionals stay in control. Every narrative that is auto generated is editable and must be reviewed and approved in order to submit it.
  • Auto-Generated Narratives is purpose-built for EMS to improve documentation and give crews more time to focus on care. It’s not a generic chatbot add-on.
  • It’s fast, effective, and compliant. Auto-Generated Narratives has already saved over 180k hours of manual entry.

Don’t just take our word for it – hear Shannon Burkemper, Chief Medical Officer at Lincoln Ambulance District, share their experience and the benefits they saw with this new technology.

We’re building the future with you.

AI isn’t the future. It’s now. Our approach is deeply committed to human empowerment, responsible and transparent AI, driving innovation with purpose, and enabling change as a partner. We’re committed to building tools that earn trust, save time, and support better outcomes without cutting corners. Auto-Generated Narratives are just the beginning.
