Fire Department Launches First All-Female Shift
Congratulations to ESO customer Spokane County Fire District #8 for their first all-female shift! As firefighter-paramedic Jennifer Raudebaugh tells FireRescue1 “I get kind of choked up about it. I want to inspire little girls – like, little girls at the grocery store go, ‘Oh my gosh, I didn’t know I could be a firefighter,'” she said. “I’m like, ‘Of course you can be a firefighter! Why wouldn’t you want to be? It’s pretty awesome.'”
Fire Department Demographics
The National Fire Protection Association’s “U.S. Fire Department Profile – 2015” offers a wide variety of interesting demographic information on firefighters. A few of those statistics are as follows
- 7.3% are women
- 30% are career firefighters
- 27% are 30-39 years old (the largest of the age brackets)
- 8% are over 60 years old
- 42% of volunteer firefighters have served at least 10 years
Departments can use this data in combination with their own personnel data to consider recruitment and retention strategies.
Are the demographics of your fire department similar to the national demographics? What strategies are successful for recruiting in your community?
